PROJECT MISSION: To improve quality of life for elderly residents of long-term care facilities.
PROJECT PURPOSE: To speak with residents and their family members at the facilities and to speak with concerned citizens in the community in order to empower residents so they are treated with respect, receive quality medical and personal care, and are free to exercise self-determination; also, to educate residents, facility staff, and the public about long-term care residents’ rights and to advocate for individual and systemic improvements.
POSITION: VOLUNTEER OMBUDSMAN
QUALIFICATIONS:
Be at least 18 years of age; have the ability to travel to required training sessions, volunteer meetings, and long-term care facilities; have a sincere interest in promoting the well-being and protecting the rights of people in long-term care; have the ability to discover facts alleged in complaints and objectively determine whether the complaints are verified or not verified; be able to work cooperatively with residents and staff to resolve complaints; successfully complete required training; dedicate at least 4 hours per month at assigned facility for at least two years; attend required meetings and trainings. No nursing home experience is necessary.

We ask for a 2-year commitment from all volunteers, to ensure stability for those living in care facilities.
Applicants must have reliable transportation and the ability to arrive at facilities on their own.
We welcome all volunteers who would like to volunteer on their own time, enjoy a flexible schedule and can work with a team.
