Volunteer with Citizen Schools!

Project Description:
Overview: Citizen Schools partners with middle schools to expand the learning day and increase opportunities for low-income middle schools students across the country. Citizen Schools provides a high quality volunteer experience that positively impacts both students and volunteers. Volunteers (called Citizen Teachers) partner with one of our staff teachers to design and teach a 10-week class (called an apprenticeship) to share their career skills, hobbies, and special interests with middle school students. Apprenticeships occur one afternoon per week for 90 minutes at one of our Boston or New Bedford campuses. Class times vary based on the school site, but will occur sometime between the hours of 2:30 – 6:00PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday afternoons. The exact time varies by campus site. Throughout an apprenticeship, Citizen Teacher volunteers engage students in hands-on activities that reinforce academic skills such as math, writing, and science, and also develop student skills such as teamwork, leadership, and technology that will help them succeed in school and in future careers. Over the 10 weeks, volunteers introduce their topic, build up excitement and skills among students, and finally help students produce something with the skills they learn. By the end of the 10 weeks, you will produce a WOW! – a final project or product that is presented to community members to showcase the students newly built knowledge and skills.

Additional Skills Required:
Training & Support: Citizen Schools sets up volunteers for success with two trainings prior to starting apprenticeships, during which they learn how to teach middle-school students and develop a highly engaging apprenticeship plan. Every Citizen Teacher is also supported by a Citizen Schools staff member who help you develop engaging activities, give feedback to improve lessons and technique, and help you prepare students for their WOW! Volunteers communicate with their Citizen Schools staff member at least once a week to debrief previous sessions and review upcoming lesson plans. Curriculum Ideas: Not sure what you want to teach? We recommend that 1st time volunteers start by looking at our online library of pre-developed full curriculum. You can teach these as they are or can adapt one as you see fit to build off your own interest and skill areas. To see a broader array of apprenticeship topics, WOW! ideas, photos, and videos you can also visit www.citizenschools.org/apprenticeships. Time Commitment Roughly 5 hours of training up front (in person and online) 9-10 weeks of teaching your students (1.5 hours perweek) 9-10 weeks of prep for each lesson prior to teaching (1-2 hours per week) Attend the culminating WOW! to support your students and celebrate all their accomplishments (2 hours) Next Steps to Get Involved Can you make the time commitment? ? Are you excited to seize this opportunity to develop deep relationships with students and have a profound impact on their (and your) futures? If so, we want you in the classroom to teach what you know and love. To sign up, visit www.citizenschools.org/volunteer/sign-up/ and a Citizen Schools staff member will follow up with you. Thank you!
